This was posted on the ferretbreedersnetwork that I run. It looks
like
[Per the FHL rules we instead suggest that vets go to:

and use the contact info there since we have NOT had
that vet or that hospital send permission to use names
or contact info YET at the time of this posting]
has successfully treated a group of ferrets (older ferrets) from one
household with no losses. Just thought it would be good to post this
here:
We had what sounds like the same thing go through our house with our
13 during the whole month of November. 11 of our 13 are between the
ages of 5 to 6 -- the 6 that were severely affected with this were in
this 5 to 6 year range. This thing hit fast, progressed even faster,
and seemed to be very, very contagious.
6 of our kids were admitted to the hospital [gibberish removed here] stayed and were put on
iv [gibberish removed here] for between 5 to 6 or so days [gibberish removed here];severely, severely dehydrated in
spite of me giving fluids at home the first day of the symptoms. This
virus severely affected the kidneys of my guys [gibberish removed here]; my one little girl
was admitted with a BUN of over 200. She literally was shriveled up
and unresponsive overnight, when the afternoon before when she first
started with symptoms she was just slightly dehydrated, for which I
gave her 60 cc of fluids. I got a call that morning from Dr.
saying we had to let go our one little girl who was recently diagnosed
with lymphoma [gibberish removed here];AND he was unsure if our other little girl would even
make it that day from the severe dehydration, in spite of my giving
fluids the previous day and the morning I rushed her and her brother
in to him w/these symptoms.
Others were admitted with BUNs as high as in the 80’s+. [Sample of gibberish left in just in case someone can figure info out from it]
[Leaving the rest of the gibberish in due to lack of time. Those are usually from mail or writing programs that were kind of patched for internet use.]
We would think we had it under control after the first few who
exhibited symptoms were eventually released from the hospital and then
10 or so days later after the first ones started we’d have additional
ones pop up with the same symptoms.
We literally had a ‘round the clock watch for symptoms in our
remaining guys…plus ‘round the clock meds/supportive care for those
not yet affected and the ones admitted and released/eventually released.
We didn’t know if we were coming or going for the whole month of
November, and just in the last few weeks we’ve finally finished up
meds for those affected…my little girl with the BUN over 200 is a true
miracle. It’s been 6 weeks since she exhibited symptoms, and 5 weeks
since she’s been back home. She’s now down to fluids 3 times a week
and weekly checks for her BUN levels. Her BUN fluctuates between the
mid 40’s to mid 50’s, depending on if she’s had her fluids the night
before her checkups or two nights before.
What seemed to work best for our guys was the clindamycin, baytril,
and omeprazole that Dr. put them on. Some of them who had
recently gotten bloodwork and had acceptable glucose levels were also
showing low glucose now. For these we added diazoxide since their
kidneys were being compromised from the virus.
