Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Insulinoma question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi John
It is hard to determine which ferret will benefit from
surgery and which ferret will only slightly benefit from
insulinoma surgery. It really depends on where the
insulinoma is located. If it is at the "tips" of the pancreas
then removing the tips with a partial pancreatectomy will
help. Usually helps a lot, but if the cancer is in the middle
of the pancreas then only a small amount of the pancreas
can be removed. Some of these ferrets only have a slight
improvement. Unfortunately you do not know where the
cancer is located until you look at the pancreas during the surgery.
Now for treatment suggestions for your ferret, time to use
Proglycem in addition to the pred. This should help and
hopefully you can reduce the pred dose. Also time to use
protein supplements to help stabilize the glucose level.
High protein, low carbohydrate foods such as Natural Gold
ferret food, Totally Ferret baby ferret formula, Gerber's or other
human baby food (chicken or turkey), Hill's a/d can food, and
Oxbow's carnivore care can all be useful.
Doxorubicin is another option. It has been suggested to use
vitamin E, vitamin C, and melatonin to reduce the chance of
damage to the heart from doxorubicin.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
