I have since heard that the treating vet(s?) think that
particular household had a good chance of instead
having a nasty bout of food poisoning from raw food,
but luckily not nasty enough to kill.

If so, this is the sort of thing that happens when
diseases are emerging because we NON-vets do not
understand nuances and at times lump together things
which simply look similar to the casual observer.
