Subject: [ferrethealth] the emerging illness

I have some advice for folks who want to use Tamiflu. The first time I
got Tamiflu, I asked that it be called into my local CVS. When I went
to pick it up, it was a large bottle (well, large if you're using it for
ferrets anyway) and it was liquid. I noticed a sticker on the box that
said discard after 7 days. It told the pharmacist that it was for a
ferret and that I would probably only use 3 or 4 ccs before the bottle
had to be discarded. Since I didn't know the prescription would be
mixed right before I picked it up (it comes in powder form in a bottle),
the pharmacist said she would be glad to sell it to me unmixed and I,
with my vet, could figure out the dosage and just mix what I needed. I
sense that not all pharmacists would be that cool about it though. The
cost for the bottle was $49.

My second prescription was called into Professional Arts pharmacy in
Catonsville, MD. It is compounded by them and was good for
approximately 60 days. I know someone that got a Tamiflu prescription
from them and it was good for six months. Since it cost about $85, it's
worth asking and making sure what you get lasts as long as possible.

I would recommend that you use a compounding pharmacy to get your
Tamiflu. But just know that in a pinch, your regular pharmacy can
provide it as well - but you might want to have the talk with them about
mixing it as you drop off your prescription. $49 for a 7 day supply of
Tamiflu can get very expensive.

It is too early to say for sure and the sample size is
too small to say for sure, but in two affected households
where the vets don't think the illness has other causes
Tamiflu appears to making a good difference, both in
the infection rate and in how badly the disease affects the
ferrets.

(Just the messenger in my own words, so any mistakes on
wording are my own...)

BTW, Tamiflu pretty much reduces viral replication. It is a
neuraminidase inhibitor. There are three drugs in that class
(generic names: oseltamivir which is Tamiflu, zanamivir, and
peramivir).
