Your shelter sounds great. I bet the ferrets there are really happy.

Perhaps being exposed to more bugs and developing a healthy immune
system is one of the contributory factors to the ferrets in the UK
generally appearing healthier than in the USA.

Most of our ferrets are kept outdoors, or at least spend time
outside. Mine live in an outdoor cage and run, they are exposed to
changes in temperature, etc.

The run is on concrete so they can't dig out but one of their
favourite enrichment toys is a box of compost to dig in, and in the
summer they have a paddling pool to help them keep cool.

Most people I know here keep their ferrets in similar conditions.
However it is getting more common to keep them indoors, style of
living and paranoia about security, so maybe we will start to see a
change here too.
