Exactly what my vet told me when I enquired about having one descented
after the first anal gland infection. There is a risk of perforating
the rectum as well as incontinence.

I suppose a surgeon who descents ferrets routinely would have the
necessary skill and experience that the risks would be minimal. My vet
hadn't descented a ferret in over 10 years and although he is a skilled
surgeon and was willing to do the procedure, he did caution that is was
a far more complicated procedure in the adult ferret than a kit. When
he told me the risks, I opted not to have her descented.
