Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Anal scent glands
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

In 27 years we've only had one ferret with infected anal glands.
Granted, most of ours had origins where there was early removal,
but not all did.

All have been primarily kibble eaters, so no input on that
aspect.

Haleakala had to have hers removed eventually. She came to us
a breeder who was retired when a male bit through one of her
eyes when mounting.

Hale did not like being expressed and we soon found that if we
just took her in the car and drove TOWARD the vet hospital at
some point she would figure out the destination and her concern
would result in a tension poof. After a number of months that
no longer worked in her case, though.

The vet said that the surgery was a difficult one, but she suffered
no complications. I have read that if a vet is not up the surgery
or if something else goes wrong there can be difficulty with
future defecation. Still, when needed it must be done.

Also, it is possible for an infected anal gland not only to drain
backward but to fistula downward and drain through lower abdomen.
