Yes, Tressie, you are right that many of the points wind
up applying to bacteria and not to viruses.

One thing that is a known factor in viral problems is
creating situations in which a virus can easily cross species.

Now, with a modified ECE that won't apply, but it does
apply to ECE's origin. ECE is thought to be a mutant of
a mink disease which crossed species barriers due to
farms having both. (Nor is it alone in that regard.)

Speaking of farms: farms which have multiple species that
can get influenzas in shared or close quarters (ex: poultry (esp
ducks), hogs, human) are places which are ripe for flus crossing
species lines, a factor which does play into ferret health
since they also get these diseases. The more susceptible
species in close quarters, the more opportunity the virus
has to be become more opportunistic.
