Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma - follow up
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This is a follow up for the post # 8612 (sorry, I am kind of new here
and am not sure if I should create a new post or continue on the old one).

So here were the number for Nina's glucose tests:

Old vet:
12/12 (glucometer) 74 mg/dL (fasted 2h). Note that this was the same
glucometer than 12/15, so chemistry should be more than 81.
12/15 (glucometer) 72 mg/dL (fasted 2h, but I am pretty sure she
didn't eat before that, so would guess she fasted for about 6-7h)
12/15 (chemistry - same blood sample from glucometer) reading was 81 mg/dL

New vet:
12/18 (chemistry - 89mg/dL - fasted for 4h, blood panel normal)
12/18 blood panel normal
She said she doesn't trust on glucometer results, cause they are
always lower than it should be.

The old vet dx my ferret with insulinoma based solely on the clinical
signs (basically sleeping more than usual, 2 episodes of diarrhea and
1 vomit - happened at the same day, on 12/11) and the glucose level.
Since then, I have read several paper and books about it, and found 2
ranges to be considered normal (90-120 and 80-120/this one from Dr
Bruce Williams paper)- Not sure which one is more accurate. So
considering both tests she had on vet # 1 were > than 80 and the third
test was 89, this is kind of high for a final insulinoma dx, isn't it.

Vet # 2 asked not to give the meds vet#1 prescribed, as she doesn't
fell comfortable on giving a final dx right now.

My ferret is doing much better! I started giving Ferret Archetypal-1
at least once a day, and am trying to stimulate her more (to play, to
eat, etc).

Although I know it could still being insulinoma (almost 5 years, from
Marshal farm (breeder for lab ferrets), eating Totally ferret and
Marshal food her whole life (this is my first ferret), could it be
depression or something else? I am a grad student and was working
crazy hours for about 2 months, and have to confess that I wasn't
playing with her as much as I should.

What do you think? I trust the second vet much more. Should I repeat
the glucose from time to time and keep an eye on her as I was told?

Thanks for everybody that have answered and helped with my previous
post! I truly appreciate it!
