Subject: [ferrethealth] extremely lethargic ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My ferret, Brutus, is almost 15 months old. He has been a very
healthy ferret until approximately one month ago. He is up to date on
all of his shots. The week after Thanksgiving we changed his food. He
didn't like the new food so he ate very little. I also had a cold/flu
this week. I was not aware that ferrets were able to get catch the
flu from humans and I was holding him a lot. He ended up having very
loose stools and became very lethargic. We switched his food back to
the old food hoping that he would begin eating regularly again. After
about 2 weeks of lethargy, loose stools, runny nose (clear
discharge), watery eyes (clear discharge), a little bit of sneezing &
coughing, I took him to the vet. They checked his poop and said he
had an overgrowth of bacteria and put him on Metronidazole for 7
days. His poop started getting back to normal and he started eating
more but he was still very, very lethargic. I took him back to vet 1
week after the first visit and they checked his bloodwork. The
results came back as "normal" and the vet put him on Clavamox drops
for 10 days. The vet said he felt a slight abnormality on his right
side but it was not very big and didn't think that it was anything to
worry about. It is now 1 week after that vet visit and my ferret is
still lethargic. He is not eating very little of his normal food
again. He gets bursts of energy for about 30 minutes a few times a
day and then "crashes" and just sleeps. His breathing appears to be
normal. His nose isn't runny and his eyes aren't watery anymore. He
is no longer sneezing. He just has no energy and doesn't want to
play. He wants to sleep ALL day! I was just wondering if this sounds
like anything anyone has encountered before. I am very concerned and
do not know what to do for him.
