Subject: [ferrethealth] Fia: single swollen lymph node + cough
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Fia is a spayed, 13-month old Path Valley ferret. She has had a
cough since May. She has been treated with antibiotics, but the
cough did not respond. Lungs sounded clear, and exam revealed no
signs of illness. We thought it might have been related to Baby's
cough at the time, but it seems that it wasn't, as his was
associated with something going on with his liver/IBD, and has gone
away now that that condition has improved.

She had a vet exam when she was given her rabies vaccination earlier
this month, and seemed fine, although again, the cough has never
completely gone away. It is not more prevalent at night, and does
not seem to cause her any problems - she is very physically active.

I boarded the ferrets at a vet's over the holiday. Fia was only
there for 5 nights, and was caged by herself. (She doesn't get along
all that well with the boys.) When I picked her up, she seemed
healthy and happy, although her fur was somewhat ragged looking, and
I noticed she'd bitten the fur off a big swath of her tail (on the
top, not the underside).

Late last night, I picked her up and was examning her fur texture,
as I was concerned that it hadn't improved since I brought her home
on Saturday. I was worried it was an indication she was ill or in
pain. I found that she had a single, very enlarged lymph node on
her right side, under her arm/by her side. None of the other nodes
are enlarged that I can tell.

I will take her to the vet tomorrow to be examined, but I am pretty
concerned that this is juvenile lymphoma. I will ask for the chest
x-ray to see if the thymus is enlarged.

Can you think of any other causes for a single lymph node to be so
enlarged? I will be moving to another city in a month, and would
like to get her as much treatment with a vet I'm familiar with as I
can, so suggestions for other possibilities are very welcome.

Thanks very much,
F.
