Barb, this makes me think of my Sasha. She came into the Big Lick
Shelter with a grossly enlarged spleen. We elected to have it removed
right away. Her spleen was 8 ozs, 1/4 her body weight of 2 lbs. Also, it
had been split/torn at some point and healed back into almost 2 separate
spleens. There just a slender bridge holding the 2 pieces together.
Sasha flourished after the surgery for about a year. She was then
diagnosed with hemolytic anemia. We were able to treat her with Pred,
starting with very high doses. Sasha lived for over 8 months after that.
She looked and acted healthy but never got her "spunk" back. She would
play for a limited time but preferred to sleep or just lay around. (She
was a major snuggle baby)
Sasha came from a very reputable breeder so we know it wasn't a
genetic problem. We also know she lived in a large homemade cage at home
of the person that surrendered her. I had never thought about the cage
until this post.
A comment made by the surrendering owner led us to believe she had been
stepped on, causing the split spleen. That doesn't explain how enlarged
it was though.
All very interesting to think about.
Jane
