Hi everybody
I know some have asked what glucose machine to
use for ferret blood glucose testing. Now Abbott has
finished their testing of their AlphaTREK machine with
ferret samples. They recommend using the dog code
(which is code number 7). They used 40 ferrets to test
their machine and then compared it to a commercial lab,
and the dog code (#7) was very accurate for ferrets.
Thus the answer to what machine to use is the Abbott
AlphaTREK machine.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM

I use the OneTouch UltraSoft Adjustable Blood Sampler (made for the
OneTouch Ultra meter, which is the meter I use)....
http://www.lifescan.com/products/lancing/
This device has 7 depth settings. I use it on the highest setting.
I've tried a few other lancing devices but none have worked quite as
well as this one.
Obtaining the sample from the tail is quite safe (again, my vet uses
this method now as well, so it does have his full approval). You want
to lance the tail *TIP* (the very end of the tail, farthest from the
body and spinal cord), NOT the base of the tail near the body. You can
do this from the side or head on (which actually isn't at all
difficult to do). Anywhere on the tip will do. In fact, on those that
I test frequently I alternate so as to avoid sores.
Ah, as I was typing this message my sweet Charlie offered his
assistance (ie; he woke up and started chowing down on some kibble,
leaving his tail out in the open and ready for lancing). It's a bit
blurry (I had to lay the camera on the floor and wasn't able to
properly focus it) but I think it shows enough to better explain....

Take note, Charlie never stopped eating his kibble. Quick, easy,
painless. :)
