Subject: [ferrethealth] Fever, joint pain
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Higgins is 3.5. Nautered male. He was slow to get up yesterday AM and when I did get him on his feet, he had difficulty staying on his feet, wobbly, fell over especially when trying to turn. Preferred to be returned to comfortable spot to sleep.
Got him into vet who found fever of 40.3C.

[For those in the U.S. conversion from Celsius to
Fahrenheit can be done in places like:

Xrays showed no obvious injury. Blood sugar 6.6 (we're in Canada) and enough blood taken for chemistry but not for CBC.

Given Baytril injection and sent home with baytril pills to give 1/2 per day.
Yesterday still eating and drank water whenever it was placed close.
7AM today - temp at 40.7C. Since little food consumed though the night, we started him on A/D - he took about 35 mils. Hubby just called and he ate another 35 mils at noon.

[Most people anywhere with ferrets are familiar with
milliliters (ml) but for those who are not see places

Temp - 40.5C
Blood chemistry back - Dr says nothing abnormal.
Advised to give another dose of Baytril tonight and if fever still present in AM to admit to hospital.
Higgins had previous illness that took 12 to 16 weeks to recover from at age 1.5. Vet at that time had him on antibiotics. He had a fever that time as well though I don't think it lasted too long. What did last was that after three weeks on antibiotics there was no overall improvment and he continued weak. A second opinion thought there might be an adrenal issue and a couple of weeks later he did have a slightly enlarged left adrenal removed. The surgery found, however a lot of scarring on liver and healing abscessed areas. Opinion then was that original opinion had been correct and Baytril was continued for another couple of months to ensure any infection was gone.
>From November 2007 till now, he has been in excellent health.
If fever does not abate, the dr plans on giving fluids throughout the day tomorrow with pred - thinking possible autoimmune problem making joints painful or lymphoma.
Any ideas?
