Subject: [ferrethealth] Help with IBD
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Kelsey,=A0 This is what I have learned from my vet and from my experienc=
e... while you could be dealing with IBD, there is most likely something el=
se going on...=A0 You say that he has been on Pred and azathioprine - both =
of those are used for IBD.=A0 If neither/both are working, its either not I=
BD or something else is going on.=A0 (Also, just a side note, not sure if y=
ou know, but azathioprine/Imuran is a chemo drug - your ferret should be ha=
ving periodic blood tests).

My ferret Gus, was diagnosed w/ intestinal lymphoma.=A0 He was also on an a=
rray of things trying to fix his diarrhea... metronidazole included, and he=
had the same response, it would initially help at first, then not.=A0 Once=
we got Gus diagnosed and on the proper chemo med, his diarrhea cleared rig=
ht up.=A0 If you've tried everything, and he's still declining... I would s=
eriously consider an exploratory surgery... this way the vet can take biops=
ies and get a definitive diagnosis for your ferret.=A0 If he's had diarrhea=
for months, its too long, and you really need some answers.=A0 Especially =
since you say his adrenal disease was malignant, I really wonder if its spr=
ead to his intestines.=A0

I really didnt want to have to put Gus thru such a major surgery either... =
just for some biopsies and an explore of his abdomen... but I knew I had tr=
ied everything non-invasive and nothing was working.=A0 I would really cons=
ider it.

I'm pleading you with guys for more ideas to help with my ferret's IBD. My =
vet and I have been battling with it for almost a year now but with no succ=
ess and she thinks it's time to put him to sleep but I just know it's not t=
ime.
His name is Willy and I'm not sure on his age, probably about 6 or 7. He ha=
s insulinoma and he gets 1.2 mL of prednisolone twice a day. He's also on a=
zathioprine, 0.12 mL once a day.
