Subject: [ferrethealth] insulinoma with concurrent adrenal?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have a 7 and a half year old ferret, Tasha, with longstanding adrenal disease and insulinoma. Her Lupron shot is overdue, but we had been worrying more about other things for a while. She has been relatively stable, if weak, for well over a year, but took a turn for the worse last week. When we went to the vet to discuss, the vet and I focused on the insulinoma, and although I asked whether we should go ahead and get her Lupron, the vet said we should wait as it would be more disruption to her system. The adrenal was just a sidenote, and was not given any real attention at all.
Tasha improved and strengthened some over the weekend and early this week, and then started going backwards again Wednesday night and Thursday. Thinking last night, it occurred to me that many (most? all?) of the symptoms that are showing up now - increased muscle loss, hind end weakness, loss of appetite - can also be caused by adrenal. While I decided that it probably is vital to keep adrenal under control in ferrets with concurrent insulinoma, I'm not sure if running Tasha in for her Lupron ASAP is a good idea or if it would cause more trouble right now. Anyone have any experience with this? My vet is out (and incommunicado) with the flu. The vet who is present in the practice is not a ferret vet. The practice knows me fairly well and I've been told that they will do it if I think it's a good idea.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?
Many thanks!
