You can use Sudocreme, a diaper cream for babies, on it. They don't like the taste, and won't lick it, and it's meant to protect against moisture. We also used things similar to it in the long term care center I worked at on open bed sores. Just put it on fairly thick, and don't try washing it off- just wipe the surface of the cream to get rid of any soil, and reapply.
Leaving it in place allows new skin to grow without being disturbed.
