Hi Jeff,

There is a rare adverse reaction to Deslorelin and Lupron - pancreatitis. I have had seven ferrets implanted with Deslorelin. I have never had an adversre reaction to Lupron and only one developed pancreatitis after receiving Deslorelin.

Fortunately, my vet and I had guidance from a ferret knowledgeable vet from the U.S. who had experienced pancreatitis as an adverse reaction in 2 ferrets treated with Lupron and 1 with Deslorelin. She has treated thousands. She lost the first one, a male who had received Lupron because she wasn't aware what was wrong with him. Post-mortem confirmed the pancreatitis.

According to her, because it is such a rare adverse reaction that has not been studied, most vets who encounter it don't recognize it as pancreatitis, because it presents as a functional obstruction but there is no obstruction.

The subsequent two were treated with sub-q hydration, which appears to be the key to surviving the bout of pancreatitis.

The thinking is that it occurs from the initial spike of hormones in those ferrets who do react.

However, if your ferret tolerated Lupron, there shouldn't be an issue with Deslorelin.

My vet places the implant in the scruff and always gives a short-term acting sedative to reduce anxiety and pain for the ferret. They don't appear to even notice when they come around.

The exception was the little one who had the adverse reaction. She started vomiting 48 hours after receiving the Deslorelin. It was touch and go for a couple of weeks but she made a full recovery. I stress - it is a rare occurrence. However, I don't know if there would be any problems with receiving the Deslorelin with Lupron still in the system, hopefully a vet will respond.

Good luck!!

Tressie

... Is there any chance of an adverse reaction, given that there will still be Lupron in her system?
