G'day, Everybody,
My German ferret friend uses 'China Oel' to treat colds, etc. in her ferrets. China Oel is 'peppermint oil' and does not contain alcohol. It is used as an inhalant, a few drops in hot water.
We had a ferret with breathing problems. We used a humidifier in his room and for inhaling hot water steam with no additives, as we were unsure about the effects on ferrets of any of them.
Put ferret in a small cage, bowl of hot water next to it, cover ferret in cage and bowl with large towel, make sure ferret can't make contact with water bowl, supervise!
All the best,
Christina
[Ferrets do NOT get colds.
People confuse bacterial sinus infections and
cases of mild influenza (for them) with colds
but ferrets do not get the rhinoviruses that cause
colds.
Per one of the world's most knowledgeable ferret
veterinary pathologists and then per a ferret vet:

and there are other, similar veterinary resources
from people who are knowledgeable.
Essential oils require respect, but this may not
be one of those. Look up both the oil and
peppermint in reliable resources such as
http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/
to check on possible known hazards.
Plain steam can be very useful as long as the ferret
is far enough away to not be overheated or burned.
Holding the ferret next to your own face and also
steaming yourself can be one way to be safer.
Ferrets can hide pneumonia so unexplained coughing
can call of a chest x-ray to be safest. Pneumonia
can easily become life threatening in a ferret.
