Subject: [ferrethealth] Two ferrets loosing weight
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
When my lil sister enlisted in the army I took over careing for her two ferrets. Louie is a six year old and we've had him since he was about a year, and Gracie is about 2-3 years old, she been in our family about a year. Over the last couple years Louie has had these spells. where he looses weight and refuses to eat anything but treats, our vet tested his blood, everything came back normal, no insolomia either (sorry if I missspelled it) Usually these spells happen in the summer when it is hot. It seems that he just doesn't eat when its hot, but if the air conditoner is on and keeps the temp down he gains it back for the most part. At the moment he doesn't seem to be haveing a spell, but he is still a little skinny and wont gain anymore then what he is at, though he needs some more wieght on him. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there a special test I should ask my vet to do?
The second ferret and the one I am mostly worried about, Gracie, has only started loosing wieght within the last couple weeks, soon after my sister left. Until now she has been plump, and has slowly lost wieght. She does eat and they have food avaiable 24-7 as well as water. Could this be related to whatever Louie has, or something else, or could she be reacting to my sister leaveing, she was their care taker and they free roam her bedroom, Louie even slept with her.
Neither one has diareia or vomiting or anything like that. I have been haveing trouble getting rid of fleas, could this have something to do with it? Louie has lost a little hair over time, but the vet didn't seem to conserned because of his age. Gracie has all her hair and besides being skinner looks good and healthy. They both are up to date on their immunizations. Niether one has been the most active ferrets and as far as I can tell they haven't been acting any different. If anyone has any suggestions as to the cause of their wieght problems I really would appreciate it.
