Subject: [ferrethealth] Persuading sick ferrets to eat a "soupy" diet
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Moderators - Not sure if this is appropriate to post here, remove if it's not. Some references in a few posts a while ago about chicken recipes and chicken baby food (which I still occasionally use to feed sick ferrets)reminded me of a suggestion by one of the two veterinarians I go to. She mentioned that one particular kind of canned food (Innova/Evo) seems very palatable to most sick ferrets. She discovered this by trying it on her own ferrets. It also (she suggested) is a more balanced diet than the Gerbers, although the fat, protein and carbs look pretty similar to me percentage wise. I was skeptical but gave it a try. It does have higher % protein levels than the Prescription diet A/D which my other vet suggests for sick ferrets with kidney disease. However I can't get sick ferrets to eat the a/d. Evo Cat and Kitten food Turkey and Chicken formula turns out to be something all my ferrets will eat when its thinned with water. When pushed through a flour/food sieve it goe
s through a syringe and you can dribble the food carefully and slowly out so that the ferret laps it from the syringe tip (only if the ferret does not want to lap out of a dish which they usually will). It's in a purple can, somewhat cheaper per ounce than Gerber's right now, and for sick ferrets that have poor appetites it might be worth trying if nothing else works. The vet said the other Evo flavors were not liked by her ferrets.
