Subject: [ferrethealth] question about insulnomia and Pred
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

ok gang here is my question,
last wed I started him on .01 cc of the pred- seeing absolutely no results in his hind end weakness , still not walking , also I am feeding him every 4 hours, should I up the does to .01.5 cc of pred every 12 hours .
Also I was told that the Pred only stays in the system for 8 hours so it would be better to give it every 8 hours to see better results.
Thanks ,

[IMPORTANT:
1. What is the ferret's weight?
2. Do you really mean 0.01 or do you mean
0.1 ml? (ml is milliliter and in your syringe
it is the same as cubic centimeter which
is abbreviated as cc.) Describe where you
are measuring to on the syringe, please.
3. What is the the CONCENTRATION of
the med you are giving? Prednisolone
comes in a range of concentrations so
the ml (volume given) alone does not
tell how much med is being given. If
you are giving 1mg/ml then the medication
amount (the mg) is 0.01 mg, but if you
are giving 3mg/ml then the medication
amount you are giving is 0.03 mg. If you
are using 5 mg/ml concentration then the
amount you are giving is 0.05 mg USING
THE MEASUREMENT YOU MENTIONED.
If you are giving the 10mg/ml concentration
of Prednisolone then that is ten times
more concentrated than the 1 mg/ml and
then you will be giving 0.1 mg of med with
each dose.
0.1 is one tenth. 0.01 is one hundredth
0.15 would be 15 hundredths or one and one
half tenths
4. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE: Call
your vet. Make sure that you are giving the
right dose. See about having blood glucose
levels measured again. Ask the concentration
of the Prednisolone you are giving if you can
not find the mg/ml notation on the bottle.
Ask if you are giving Prednisolone or Prednisone.
The glucose levels were measured before meds
were begun, right? Sometimes diabetes can
have the same symptoms as insulinoma but then
giving Pred becomes dangerous.

Yes, as insulinoma changes doses are adjusted
and some ferrets are more helped by dividing the
doses to three times a day rather than 2 but the
one hundredth amount you noted down is extremely
confusing so you HAVE to check those things with
the treating vet. You might even want to take the
syringe in with you to the vet hospital and show a
tech where you are measuring to and then ask if
that is 0.01 or 0.1 and if it matches the amount
you should be giving.
