First of all there is no need to get him descented. I recently lost my 8 year old hob, and he did not "poof" more than 10 times in his life. However, hobs do smell when they come into rut, and that can last a few months. They also mark urine on shoes and anything they walk over. If you can't live with that, then you can get him neutered, and I would wait until he is at least six months of age. He will lose some of his mass though. I don't know if his personality would change.
