Subject: [ferrethealth] About Revolution and Advantage storage
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
We store it in a glass rubber-top tube (used for blood collection). The vet gives us a syringe and we draw up the Revolution from the container, and inject it into the rubber top tube. It doesn't evaporate, and then you can draw up as much as you need per lb of ferret. I've had bad luck with storage in syringes (they can get pressed and the product goes everywhere, or evaporates in the syringe over the long term, even with plastic caps or needles on).
Most vets have a contract with the drug reps, and companies, to support one parasite prevention product only.
That means many vets will not sell Revolution and only prescribe Advantage, or vice-versa. I had one clinic tell me that Revolution was only given to itty bitty kittens, and all else was prescribed Advantage due to their contract. They were honest and told me they really didn't prefer one over the other.
Personally, I use feline Revolution. For ferrets I know have been exposed to the elements, I don't use a full ferret dose, so heartworms would be unaffected. There are four types of doses given to ferrets. One, is the least effective, and only kills earmites. Two is earmites and fleas, and three is the dose that will kill heartworms, fleas, and mites. The fourth is the new "approved" dose, which is a full tube of Revolution. I know personally that Revolution is effective for fleas and mites at lower levels, having several infestations after rescues came in directly after being found outdoors, covered in fleas. These lower levels are perfect and rid the house of fleas and mites, often requiring no more doses. Only once have I had to give Revolution two months in a row.
Obviously in situations where eggs are hatching in the environment, it would be a monthly process. However I've found it's easier to use and cheaper than Advantage. Even though I use Revolution I have many friends who use Advantage, and if Revolution were unavailable I would have no issue using it.
