Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: revolution or something for mosquito bites an fleas
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Folks, experience using both Revolution and Advantage for fleas and ear mites showed us that Revolution 2 drops on the back of the neck is sufficient to treat fleas and earmites (and also sarcoptic mange 3 drops) and repeated 3 weeks latter seems to stop reoccurance with montly followup during flea season.
We Do Not use Advantage Multi on our ferrets as it was prone to cause an allergic reaction.
Instead we use Advantage for Dogs 4ml tube one drop on the back of neck for females and two drops for males. Fleas die very quickly and we often found they quickly leapt off soon after administration. Advantage for cats .4 ml at least here in New Zealand has the same ingredient composition as the dog Advantage and 4ml dog is about the same cost as .4ml Advantage cat. Vets here will sell tubes individually. With the cape replaced it stayed effective for a few weeks without seeming to lose efficacy.
One thing of note, we found that lighter coat coloured ferrets were more prone to reaction to Advantage with slight hair thinning at point of administration and redness for for couple of days. these were treated next time with Revolution.
I would suggest using Advantage (NOT MULTI) for Flea treatment and Revolution for Flea AND Earmites, I have heard that Revolution can treat heartworm in the early stages, but that it may be very risky once the heartworm has developed to a larger size.
I worked with 1500 breeding ferrets till the business closed and Advantage worked well for the vast majority of ferrets needing flea
treatment.
A friend simply holds his ferrets in the shower when there are fleas and rinses them off, and uses a flea spray treatment to spray the floor area or bedding that is infected. Seems to work very well.

[Many flea sprays available in stores here in the U.S.
pose risks to ferrets. Over the counter flea products
have a history of causing problems, even marrow
failure.
