Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Rabies vaccine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

when mine had a reaction it was within 30 minutes of the shot.. I think Benadryl was given as an antidote.

[An antihistamine is sometimes enough if a reaction is
mild. More serious reactions require epinephren as the
main med, fluids, steroids, antihistamines, and even
some time in a box fitted with higher that normal oxygen
levels. Reactions involve the immune system responding
wrong to a substance which is why they are not going
to happen once the substance is gone. Normally, a
different part of the immune system is educated by the
vaccine -- which is how vaccines work, by educating the
immune system about what to respond to strongly enough
(but preferably not overly strongly or by the wrong portion
of the immune system). -- Moderator (SDC)]
