Hi, Lisa,

Adrenal will definitely cause a deterioration in your girl's quality
of life if left untreated. You may want to go through the archives
and read the symptoms. The other issue is if you are dealing with a
right adrenal, a difficult surgery to begin with, it will only become
more of a problem as the tumor grows and the vena cava becomes more
involved.

Four or five is not that old. I've had a right adrenal surgery done on
a ferret as old as 7.5 successfully. It depends entirely on the
general health of your ferret (sounds good from your note) and the
skills of your vet. If he or she has good experiences with right
adrenal surgery and with bilateral adrenal ferrets.

The recovery from a second adrenal surgery can be very difficult on
the ferret. Please read up on surgically induced Addison's disease
and the worst case (unlikely) scenario of an Addisonian Crisis so that
you know the risks and what to watch for if you decide to go with
surgery. The good news is that if all goes well your girl could
easily have good years ahead of her.

If you decide not to go with surgery after discussing it with your
ferret's vet you may want to consider Lupron depot to relieve
symptoms. It works very well for some ferrets, not so well for
others. The bad news with Lupron is that even if it does work over
time it will become more expensive than the surgery.

You have a difficult decision ahead of you. At your ferret's age I've
always chosen the surgery and, thankfully, the results have been very
good.

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
