Subject: [ferrethealth] First case of H1N1 in ferret confirmed in Atlantic Canada
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My vet has the first case of H1N1 confirmed in a ferret in Nova Scotia.

3 ferrets presented at his clinic last Thursday with acute upper respiratory signs (coughing and sneezing), lethargy and inappetence. None of the ferrets had a fever or abnormal lung sounds. Hydration was normal since ferrets were still drinking regularly.

The owner of these ferrets tested positive for H1N1 and had been quarantined at home the last 10 days. The vet used a sterile micro-tip swab to collect a sample from both nostrils from one of the ferret that had noticeable nasal discharge. The sample was sent to a local research laboratory and resulted in a "strong" positive for H1N1.

These ferrets are now being treated with a suspension of Tamiflu at 2 mg/kg PO BID for 7-10 days and Healx Booster.

He has notified the provincial Veterinary Medical Association requesting that they alert their members to be on the watch for the virus in ferrets presenting to their clinics; and had asked me to pass the alert on to ferret owners.
