Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Is there such a thing as mechanically induced IBD?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My two ferrets who have had IBD both spent their first two years of life without me. One had been abandoned and stray for who knows how long, and also fit that description of "garbage gut," battling obesity problems for the rest of his life. The other came from a confirmed neglectful-to-the-point-of-abusive home. She's a sensible eater now and maintains very well on a low dose of pred. But I think their early dietary histories definitely set both of them up for IBD. I have no solid evidence for this--really, with IBD we don't seem to have a lot of solid evidence about much-- but my, er, gut feeling is that malnutrition and poor foods damaged their young digestive systems to the point where they couldn't heal up. So I am inclined to think that yes, IBD can be mechanically induced.
