Subject: [ferrethealth] KIT-positive tumor in ferret
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>, fg <ferret-genetics@yahoogroups.com>

(Bccing to some vets)

As Dr. Michelle Hawkins has expressed in the past, sometimes things=20
just stink of genetics. If I understand this properly this is just=20
such a situation:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19901303

> J Vet Diagn Invest. 2009 Nov;21(6):915-7.
> A KIT-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a ferret (Mustela=20
> putorius furo).
> Girard-Luc A, Prata D, Huet H, Lagadic M, Bernex F.
> Unit=E9 d'Embryologie, d'Histologie et d'Anatomie Pathologique and=20
> INRA UMR 955, Ecole Nationale V=E9t=E9rinaire d'Alfort, 7 avenue du=20
> G=E9n=E9ral de Gaulle, 94704 Maisons-Alfort Cedex, France.
> A 1.5-year-old, neutered, male ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was=20
> presented with sudden lethargy, anorexia, and diarrhea. Clinical and=20
> radiographic examinations revealed an intra-abdominal mass. An=20
> explorative laparotomy was performed. A neoplasm, located in the=20
> ileum wall, was submitted for histopathologic examination. The tumor=20
> consisted of weakly eosinophilic spindle cells arranged in a compact=20
> pattern with haphazardly interlacing bundles. Neoplastic cells=20
> labeled positively for KIT (cluster of differentiation 117, stem=20
> cell factor receptor) and vimentin. Based on histologic and=20
> immunohistologic results, this tumor was diagnosed as a=20
> gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Results suggest that this ferret=20
> tumor shares strong similarities with the canine and human=20
> counterparts.
