Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Need Slippery Elm Help
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I would not recommend slippery elm bark powder as a sole remedy for nausea and teeth grinding. I use it as a minor ingredient in the soup that we feed our ferrets, as I believe that it helps the digestive system in several ways, including to coat and soothe any upsets that might be caused by ulcers, IBD, etc. A little slippery elm bark powder goes a long way when mixed with soup, so be careful not to over-use it if you are giving it on its own.

For a more direct and fast-acting remedy for nausea and teeth grinding that may be associated with ulcers and the excess acid that they create, I would recommend using Pepcid AC tablets. I take one 10.0 mg tablet, dissolve it in 4.0 ml. of water (I use bottled water for this), then dispense 0.33 ml of the solution as needed to help bouts of nausea and/or teeth grinding. It helps with the occasional upset tummy as well. Be sure to shake well before each use, as the dissolved tablet tends to settle at the bottom. Also, refridgerate unused portion.

Pepcid AC contains only one active ingredient, famotidine, and is probably safer than using any other type of 'Pepto' product.

Insulinoma itself isn't usually a cause of nausea. Has he been checked and/or treated for possible ulcers? They do often accompany insulinoma, due to the excess stress on the ferret's body. There are a few protocols to help with ulcers, but in the past we've used Amoxicillin, carafate, and the Pepcid AC together, being sure to separate the carafate from the other meds by at least 1 hour.

[Always check with the treating vet before starting
any med of any type, including herbal.

Insulinoma itself can cause nausea if blood sugar
drops low enough.
