I have just read the messages that Sukie highlighted and understand the principles that various contributers are explaining.

I do take issue with the supposed significance of photo period melatonin effects on this issue. it may be a factor but not in the case of my ferrets.
My two ferrets (both on the Suprelorin implant) have never been subject to photo period alteration by artificial light. They are confined to their cage as dusk turns to full darkness in an unlit room and in dark sleeping boxes. If there is any defect in their melatonin production it is not caused by photo period alteration.
They were both neutered at the time they were expected to have their first breeding cycle (the beginning of march in their first spring - northern hemisphere).
I have no way to prove/disprove gentetic factors in melatonin production or any other effect.
I know that they have periods of activity during the night but they are still in a dark room with no light at all (except moonlight)
Yes, some entire ferrets get adrenal disease but they are small in number compared to neutered ferrets.
