You make good points but I am not convinced in the case of my ferrets.
The ferret room is surrounded by a belt of trees, in winter a couple of street lights can be seen due to lack of foliage but they are at least 200 yds away and are yellow/orange (sodium). I am not completely discounting the role of melatonin just the reason for any discrepancy. In any case neutering seems to be a prerequisite, except in a few unquantified cases and which may be caused by different mechanisms (genetic, viral, chemical and 'other' hormonal .
