Chemical or surgical castration i.e. Deslorelin or spaying and why?

Hi Jone,

At the moment, I do not have enough experience with the chemical neutering
to give an opinion based on experience, but for now, I would choose
Deslorelin over spaying.

I currently have a jill I got from Aija in Finland who came with a
Deslorelin implant. She has better muscle tome and weight than a jill who
has been spayed, which indicates to me that her body is not going through
the changes that surgical altering causes The implant is just keeping her
from coming in season. When the implant wears off, I will then make a
decision as to whether or not I will have her surgically spayed. By then,
she will be past the age I where I would use her for breeding.

In the past, here in the US, we have seen jills develop uterine cancer when
they were kept whole and given hormone injections to bring them out of
season. I am told that of the 2 drugs normally used for this, one does have
a link to causing cancer, and so the injections themselves may be the
problem. But, because most of our ferrets are either altered, or used in
breeding a few years and then altered, there is a question of whether or not
leaving a jill whole will eventually lead to possible uterine cancer, and if
so, if using Deslorelin will also have that problem.

I do believe that early surgical altering is a factor in causing Adrenal
Disease. Later altering has less effect, but some of those ferrets still
will develop Adrenal Disease. Right now, it appears that ferrets with the
Deslorelin implant do not develop Adrenal Disease, so the implant seems a
better way to go - at least to me.

I will be interested in hearing and seeing what happens over time with the
ferrets who are chemically altered with the implant.
