Gum disease in itself can be very painful and can inhibit proper eating, but can also contribute to other problems like heart disease. I would strongly recommend that you stop looking for mushrooms and get your ferret to a good ferret vet right away, where, at the very least, he can start him on some antibiotics and possibly a topical gel or ointment to begin to clean up the problem. Then it can probably be better diagnosed. A teeth scaling might be suggested, and the vet might be able to provide you with some kind of ferret toothpaste to help avoid this problem in the future.
