Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferrets, cold temps, and health
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi, everyone...
It's a long story, but I'm going to spare the details of the situation and
get to the most important thing, which is my ferrets and cold weather. I
don't have heat and may not for another month and am wondering how ferrets
fair in cold temperatures (indoors) and if it affects their health or
well-being. I have space heaters, the safe kind (safe as they make them),
and I never ever run them when I'm not home due to safety reasons,
naturally. I have to work today (6.5 hours) and have to leave the heaters
off while gone. This morning, after the little heaters ran all night long,
the thermostat said 60*F
I *think* that the temperature will drop further than the 60*F in here while
I'm gone (we have plaster and lathe walls, which means no insulation) and am
concerned about how the ferrets will fare this. Our high today is supposed
to be 52*F.
Do I need to worry? Is there anything I can do, short of just making sure
there are blankets and sleep sacks, etc in their cages? There are 2 cages,
and 4 sleep in one, 2 in the other. One of the two in the one cage has
adrenal disease and doesn't have much hair (not completely bald, though), so
I worry about him. he has 'issues' with a couple of the other ferrets that
arise on occasion, so I can't put him and his cage mate in with the others
to stay for hours.
I realize ferrets have safety issues with regards to heat in the summer, and
we've no problems in that respect, but I'm worried about the cold indoors
while I'm away and want to make sure I do everything I can to make them
comfortable while I'm away today.
Thanks so much,
Ella
