Subject: [ferrethealth] Deslorelin Implants - Legal to Import?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have been watching the info coming in on the Des implants, and have been eager to try them in our shelter (Ferret Rescue of Maine) and was recently forwarded the contact info for Peptech.
I forwarded this info to both of our vets, for their info and to see if either of them wanted to order some.
The following is what I received from our main vet. She is well known in the Northeast, and always seems to "be in the know", so I'm concerned about trying to order any of these.
>Hi Jim, Katie --
>This is NOT a legal method for obtaining them in the US and the FDA >can impound them if brought in this way, plus cause the DVM a world of >hurt.
>Right now we can only get them through enrolling in one of the study >programs -- kind of a hassle, I've had 4 implants this way -- but >still the only legal way to do it right now.
>FWIW!
>-SM
Any thoughts on her comments, and has anyone had any problems or repercussions from ordering these?
Thanks,
Jim
[Wow, will you ever hear from a number of Canadian
and U.S. vets and their clients who had them imported.
We have not personally done that yet, so their replies
will help you and your vet.
The Veterinary Division and the one involved with
importation at the FDA had been thinking opposite
things for several years. A few months ago they
noticed that and began communicating with each
other. I know about that because I had a ring-side
seat at the time and was copied by both divisions.
The first figured that the implants were
already accepted because the horse one was but
the second thought that the implants themselves
needed separate permission. So, at first it became
possible possible with a few pieces of FDA paper-
work to import, then people reported that for a
while more paperwork was needed. Most recently,
people's vets have been telling them that it is now
very easy and acceptable.
Peptech will be about to update you and your vet
and you can also ask the FDA what paperwork they
want from your veterinarian at this point in time.
There are multiple past posts in the easily searched
FHL Archives on this and you can find the links and
contact info you need in them. See:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL9791
to see the start of the conversation between the two
branches.

I lack time so just pulled up a few but you can search
further.
Looking for
import or importation
in the message body is one way
or you could search on combos that contain
words like
"FDA" or peptech and just leave the other
two boxes blank for widest number of hits.
I had to go narrow in my search to save time.
