Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Deslorelin questions
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

My vet charges $150 per Deslorelin implant and gets them from Australia
(9.4 mg). He says that it is the only dosage he will use. We have
found that the UK Deslorelin (4.7 mg) is $101 for two implants, which
would make it a much cheaper option for a shelter that has many older
ferrets that need an implant.

Does the higher dosage control the adrenal disease any better? Does the
9.4 work longer than 1 year?

I just had one of my ferrets implanted with Deslorelin this week - and I
also had the vet do a melatonin implant as well. Can I just say that it
would be VERY nice if Melatek and the Deslorelin people could get
together and pre-load one syringe with both implants. Those needles are
so large that it would be nice to only have to poke them once!!!

Hi Tony and Tressie
Your question about "how long it last" needs more info.
What size implant are you using? It currently comes in
2 sizes a 4.7 mg and a 9.4 mg. There used to be a 3 mg
size also. The one article on Deslorelin (Suprelorin) came out
4 years ago. Dr Wagner form the U of Pitt used the 3 mg
implant in that study. It controlled the disease for 8.5 months
to 20.5 months. The 4.7 mg should last for slightly longer (ie
at least 12 months), but there has been no published data to
say for sure how long it can control adrenal gland disease.
If you use the 4.7mg implant then roughly every 12 months
but keep a close eye on them after 8 months for any signs
of adrenal gland disease returning.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
