Subject: [ferrethealth] Bleeding from the mouth
I posted earlier this week about Austin and his ulcers. Immediately following the start of antibiotics, he developed almost an entire white inflamed mouth - like one big canker sore. I found his last night in a puddle of blood. I was worried he was vomitting blood and I cleaned him up. I found the blood was from the mouth itself. The sore are now a bunch of deep open wounds and still some canker sores. I don't know if it's thrush or something else. There is no foul odor but I can't help wondering if there was something in the mouth to begin with. I'm having to clean up crusted and also fresh blood off his mouth every couple hours. Cleaning some times also shows small pieces of flesh as it opens up. Obviously, every time he opens his mouth or moves it in any way, it all reopens and bleeds worse. We're feeding small amounts of a soup of carnivore care and AD and giving 15CC of sub q fluids daily. I can only manage about 10 mL of food 4 times a day. Some times the pain is just t
oo much for him to even consider eating. He definately seems hungry though. I've left a message for our regular vet trying to get an appointment but no call back so far. I have no clue what to do.
Sam, call the vet NOW and ask for emergency call back
for a possible allergic reaction or possible Steven-Johnson
Syndrome reaction. Hopefully, that is not what is going on
but these are possibilities given your description.
In the first case they will stop the possible origin, but with
the second there will be treatment needed.
Of course, it may not be either of these, but from what you
say it could be and neither should be messed around with.
If your vet is told this but does not reply then you need to
find a different one and get there for an emergency appointment.
These may help you and I am sure other people will recommend
