Hi Jeff,
Cannoli did this shortly before he blocked completely. He went from urinating frequently with small volume to squatting and having trouble voiding, changing spots and trying again, to completely blocking in a matter of days. He had an appointment with the vet for Monday morning but I ended up having to rush him to the emergency clinic Sunday night.
In his case it was symptomatic of adrenal disease.
Sampson who did have uroliths would cry out in pain when voiding and voided frequently when he was passing them. He had numerous chronic health issues in the year he was with me. In the end he was voiding frequently and it was clearly painful for him. Necropsy confirmed adrenal carcinoma and scarred kidneys (presumably from chronic infections).
Sometimes the urine may look normal but contains blood. A strip would tell you for certain. You can get these from your vet.
If you haven't already taken him to the vet, I would suggest getting him in, which may not be possible given the holiday. However, be prepared to rush him to the emergency clinic if he blocks, which as you know is an emergency.
Good luck, hope he's better soon.
Tressie
