Subject: [ferrethealth] Help! My ferret is growing an extra toe!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

She's not, but that's what it looks like. Her claws are clipped
approximately every two weeks, and in between the time her nails were
last trimmed and Friday night, she somehow grew a roundish, kind of
stubby thing on her hind foot, in between what would be a human's
thumb and first finger. If you look very closely, you can see a black
area extending a little way under the normal skin at the base of the foot.

The new "toe" is hard, and feels kind of scabby. The thing will bleed
a little, if picked and poked at (the vet found this out, I did not).
She doesn't lick at it or bite it, and it does not seem to cause any
pain, although the ferret isn't enthusiastic about having it messed
with too much. She's been to see the vet already, but we aren't any
further along from it. Right now she's getting SMZ twice daily, and
chlorhexidine soaks, but there's not been any change. Nothing softens
up or falls off when the foot is soaked.

This is a little old lady ferret with a fine assortment of elderly
ferret health problems already - she has insulinoma, so she's on pred;
she has adrenal disease; and she has some kind of mass on her spleen.
Given her age and a couple of other details, our vet does not think
it's a good idea to try to operate, and we fully agree on this.

I'll be talking to our vet again tomorrow, but thought maybe someone
here has seen something like this to ask about.

Thanks in advance!
