Often when B-12 is needed it is not absorbed well enough orally. In
that case injection is the way to go. The amount needed orally to
equal the same level that would be gotten by injection is very high.
So, think injection. Later, if the ferret seems to absorb it well
enough the oral route can be used to maintain levels if the vet thinks
that more is needed.

It is also possible to have some conditions that damage the stomach or
intestine to cause problems absorbing it, causing a chronic problem.

Some other medical problems might cause drops which can be more
quickly corrected. (Info on these is in one of the human references.)

A lot of times people don't realize if an injection has first been used.

Here are some refs:

human refs but have some useful info and some cover things others do
not:

In humans if there is a problem absorbing one B vitamin sometimes
there is a problem absorbing more than one (something I know from my
own family).
