Subject: [ferrethealth] Capstar
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

As I said earlier, my vet feels that Capstar IS safe for ferrets with a
major flea infestation. He once gave me a tablet and said to only give
1/2. I never used it. I believe he HAS used it on small animals when
conventional means wouldn't work. I was not suggesting it as an on-
going treatment, as Dr. Murray was talking about, but for a one-time
use. Once the fleas are removed from the ferret(s) and the
environment, no further treatment is necessary. As I mentioned
earlier, I don't do monthly flea treatments on my ferrets at all, and
never have. I stop them before they get in the door.

My suggestion would be to talk to your vet before using Capstar on any
animal. In fact, if I did need to use it, I would probably ask my vet
to give the pill and leave the animal there to be observed, ferret,
dog, or whatever. And, IMO, it should only be used in extreme cases.

Any drug can cause seizures. Any drugs should be used with caution and
under a vet's superivison. I would certainly try Capstar when
conventional means didn't work.
