Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:should I vaccinate elderly ferret for distemper
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have stopped vaccinating my ferrets when they are above 3 years of age.
This may be radical, but I think the risk of a reaction is higher than the
risk of getting distemper or rabies. But mine have very little exposure to
getting it - I hope I am not wrong on this. They have their own bedroom, and no
one walks in it with outside shoes on. They do not go to shows or any place
except to the vet. My vet seemed to indicate that the main reason he advises
the vaccines is to follow protocol and be "legal" in terms of what he is
supposed to be doing. Does anyone in the group think that I am putting my
ferrets at risk? They are now four years old and I would do almost anything for
them - I just get concerned about reaction risks combined with the stress of
dragging them to the vet for these shots each year when the risk appears to me
to be so low.
