Hello All,
Sorry for the long post, but I can not contact my vet and I am very
worried here.
I have a 4y9m male who was diagnosed with insulinoma in Jun/08. Blood
glucose was then around 30-35. He went into surgery, when a nodule
was removed from his pancreas - and pancreas looked OK. Biopsy came
back and nodule was benign. Then a week or two later he started to
have low blood glocose again and so we were back to Pred.
We treated him with Pred until Dec/08, when he went into another
surgery, this time to remove part of the pancreas. His spleen was
also removed as it had a very suspect appearance. Biopsy results came
back showing some spleen tumor (Thank God it was removed) and
pancreas very OK. So vet and I figured out the good part of pancreas
had been removed instead of the bad - there was no visual difference
between then, nothing that could guide the vet during the surgery -
she just extracted the part books advise. Also she observed the whole
pancreas did not look healthy. Then aweek after the surgery we went
back to Pred as his blood glucose was very low (now around 20/25,
confirming our suspect that the ill part of the pancreas had been
kept) without medication. Even being on Pred, blood glucose would be
around 40, around 10-12 hours after being medicated.
Last week we decided to try Dexametasone, as it only needs to be
given once a day. The twice a day Pred schedule was driving the
ferret crazy, he hated being waken up for medicine, hated the Pred
taste as much as we tryed to cover it up, was starting to run away to
hide every time we appeared in the ferret room. Since them we have
blood glucose 130 on the first day, 184 two days later, 237 four days
later and tonight (a week after starting Dexametasone) we have 430!!
Now I=B4m very worried and did not give him tonight=B4s medicine. He was
being given 0,5mg of Dexametasone once a day.
Any thoughts? Any help will be very welcome.
