I would agree with Patty, Dexamethasone is a considerably more
powerful steroid than prednisone and may need more tweaking and
adjusting to get the dose correct for your little guy. The good
thing is that it is quickly metabolized and out of the system.

Are you giving it as a sub-q injection or orally? Its easier to
adjust and administer as an injectable. I believe prednisone comes
as in an injectable form as well and that may be a better option for
you. Diazoxide does not come in an injectable form for managing
insulinoma.

It really is very easy to inject sub-q if you get 31 gauge insulin
syringes available at most pharmacies without prescriptions. The
needles are super fine and short. If you haven't done this before
you can ask your vet to show you how to do a sub-q injection and how
to draw up the syringe from the vial, which you keep in the fridge.
Once learned it really is easy to do and with the super fine needles
essentially painless for the ferret. If you can do the glucose
tests, the injections are a no-brainer.

In the interim until you can get him to the vet I would drop the Dex
dose but don't eliminate it altogether.

Of course you do want to get him assessed to make certain he hasn't
developed diabetes either temporarily from the surgery or otherwise.

in some countries all syringes are by prescription.
In some other countries none need prescriptions.
Vets can give prescriptions for syringes.]
