Subject: [ferrethealth] Abused Ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi there,

I need some help with a couple of ferrets. I got them yesterday from
someone who was moving, and its obvious these two little girls were
abused. I know this isnt health related, but I thought maybe someone
here has dealt with two abused ferrets and would be able to help me out.

The guy that I recieved these two from said they came from a shelter
and he thought they were abused before he had them.

I gave them a bath, from the smell of them they both had never had
baths before and they are about 21/2-3 years old. I was getting bit
constantly by one, the other one was fine. I tried using the tub and
the sink and it didnt seem to matter. I realize it was a new experience
for them, Im just wondering if theres something I can do differently so
I dont stress them out as much.

Also, I had a friend hold them and I cut their nails. One of them tried
to bite, the other one just wiggled alot. Im fine with the wiggling, Im
just wondering if scuffing them to do the nails isnt a good idea on
these two.

The reason why I didnt let them get used to their surroundings for a
couple of days then do all of this is because their nails were over an
inch too long, I was afraid they were going to get their nails cought
on their hammock.

They are very scared, shake when I pick them up, and are somewhat
skinny in my openion. I have already taken in a fecal to the vets for
them, and their appointment to be seen is on monday.

If anyone has any ideas of how to help these two girls out, please let
me know. I will do whatever it takes to get them socialized and well. I
just feel right now like im hopeless and dont know what to do for the
poor girls.

Thanks in advance if you have any advice for me with these two.

-Rachael
