If the vet believes there's an obstruction, it's possible that he swallowed something that is slowly poisoning him and could be causing any number of problems with his digestive tract. It could be any number of things, from a solid object to an accumulation of fabric from bedding.

Is he grinding his teeth or vomiting at all? Those could be signs of ulcers. Is your vet very experienced with ferrets, and capable of getting to the cause if exploratory surgery is done? If not, then you might want to find a vet who does know a lot about ferrets and get a second opinion.
