Subject: [ferrethealth] 2 Ferrets are unable to walk in the hind end
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have 2 ferrets that have just come down not being able to use their
hind legs. The little girl push around with hers so she can get to
the potty papers. The male only is able to drag himself around.
Info on the 2:
Max is 5.5 years old
Good heath and never been ill
Weight is about 4#
I have had him for most of his life with the exception of one year.
He has been her for 3.5 years now. He was tested for ADV when he
arrived and it was negative.
Molly is a bit over 8
insulinomic and taking .5cc of pred twice aday
She had adrenal surgery over 3 years ago and i suspect she is adrenal
again.
My friend past away and I got Molly along with her 11 brothers and
sisters almost 4 years ago. She was adopted from Kristine Lunny's
shelter at the age of 1.
There has been x-rays and ultra-sounds done on both ferrets but there
wasn't anything in either of them concerning broken bones, etc.
Max has had this problem for over 1.5 weeks. He was put on 1cc of
pred twice aday for 5 days and then 1cc once a day. He was actually
walking on his hind legs within 2 days, but would fall over if he
hurried. On the 2nd of of 1cc once aday he wasn't walking again.
Call my vet and he told me to go back to the 1cc twice aday and give
him an extra 1cc right then. He has shown no improvement since i
started the 2cc a day ago. He pees all over himself and can't make
it to the papers. I have to say, he doesn't like this much. He
wants to get out and go play and he looks at me through the cage and
I feel terrible and want to help him, but i don't know how.
Molly is also on 1cc pred twice aday. [Vet name removed as per rules]
thought it might be
low glucose. I haven't seen any improvement with her either and she
has had 2 full doses already.
Their appetites are great and eat soup and crunches as normal.
I also have a little boy that can't walk on his hind legs but LB gets
around to where ever he wants to go. His was due to an injury. So I
am use to the no walking but not 2 ferrets that are in the same group
not be able to walk within several days of one another. There are 4
others in the same group and no others are showing signs of not
walking.
If anyone could give me some idea of what to look for or what tests
to run it would be greatly appreciated by myself and Max and Molly.
Any ideas??????? Are blood tests inorder? If so, what are
we looking for?
Thanks for any help that you can give us.
Linda
