Thanks tressie,

The vet took the glucose test which read 50 and said it would be best
to try and control it with diet till his full chem panel came back
and we could see if he was a candidate for surgery.I thought it was
odd that she sent us home with nothing for a week except to feed him
high protien every four hrs which I was already doing.

She finally called on jan 2nd even though the test paper says
reported 12/30/08.She basically read off dopy's results and said she
was moving out of state and would hand over dopy to another vet in
the practice.

I brought dopy to this other vet on monday soon as the doors opened
and he basically gave dopy sq fluids and sent me home with a bottle
of pred after I asked him for it. They were shying away from the pred
because of the liver function results, but to me he was in critical
condition and was not gonna be around much longer without medical
intervention.

I made a huge mistake with the vet I chose, major life costing
mistake.I moved from nj to pa 18 months ago and looked for a ferret
vet as soon as I got settled. This vet group looked real good since
they had a very large hospital staffed with certified surgeouns plus
alot of bells and whistles like aquatic therapy ect... and they had a
picture of a ferret in thier ads which you rarley see. This just gave
me the false feeling of security that they must have a good ferret
doc on staff.I even called a yr prior to this and they assured me dr
so n so is regarded as the ferret exspert on staff.

I originally went to dr so and so , but I did not like that he gave
dopy prednisone last month instead of benidryl for his pre allergy
vacination shot.To me it looked like he really didnt care and I was
being a pain in the butt when I said arent you gone give him his pre
shot? The nurse seemed to whisper something and he said get me a
syringe of pred. This has bothered me ever since as I did not want
pred in dopys body for any other reason besides an emergency or if he
ever came down with insulinoma.

So after that I made a decision to go to the other vet on staff that
advertised as a exotic animal doctor, she was a few yrs out of school
and as I found out a week after going to her , she was leaving the
practice and I would be back to dr so and so.

I could care less about the money I spent with these vets, but I do
care that dopy got garbage care from them.

I also would have driven dpy 3 hrs to nj, but I did not think we had
the time to do this till dopy's condition was stabilized.

To your original question, yes I had the pred on hand the the day he
passed away after having to ask for it that morning. I gave 0.5 mg to
dopy at 1pm that day and he died about 16 hrs later.Looking back I
feel the vet should have put dopy on 0.5 2x daily after the first
glucose reading at least until all other testing was completed and we
figured out the best course of action.
